The Flemish ports and waterways authorities attach a great deal of importance to sustainability. The environmentally responsible collection of waste generated by inland waterways helps implement the principle of sustainability.
The Convention on the Collection, Deposit and Intake of waste produced during navigation on the Rhine and Inland Waterways (also known as the CDNI) was signed in Strasbourg in 1996 and after ratification by all the Contracting States came into force on November 1, 2009.
The objective of this Convention is to increase awareness on the pollution of surface water, the limitation of the quantity of waste and the promotion of recycling among all the parties concerned - so, not only the captain or the crew, but also the charterer and the consignee of the cargo.
This Convention distinguishes three types of waste :
